CAS Lecture Series - Sudan and the UAE: Revisiting a 1970s moment of Pan-Africanism

Speaker: Alden Young (Yale University)

This talk will discuss the emerging relationship between Sudan and other African countries and the newly independent UAE during the 1970s. It will examine how intellectuals from both sides of the Red Sea imagined the unfolding relationship and its potential to lead to development in both regions. It will also look at the potential roadblocks to cooperation that were imagined at the time. Finally, using the archive of the Sudanese scholar Hajj Hamad, this talk will discuss the practical ways in which Africans have contributed to the power of Arab Gulf states.
