Join us for a Reading and Q&A with award-winning Japanese to English translator Polly Barton for a reading of her recent works in Japanese contemporary literature. This event is free and open to the public. We look forward to your attendance!

About the Speaker

Polly Barton's translations from Japanese to English include the bestselling Butter by Asako Yuzuki, Where the Wild Ladies Are by Aoko Matsuda, There's no Such Thing as an Easy Job by Kikuko Tsumura, and Spring Garden by Tomoka Shibasaki. Her English-language translation of Hunchback by Saou Ichikawa was longlisted for the International Booker Prize 2025. Barton is also author of the highly-celebrated Fifty Sounds (winner of the 2019 Fitzcarraldo Editions Essay Prize and longlisted for the 2022 Ondaatje prize), and Pom: An Oral History. Her debut novel, What Am I, A Deer?, will appear in Fitzcarraldo in April.
