Nadia Murad, co-recipient of the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize is a leading advocate for survivors of genocide and sexual violence. Nadia’s peaceful life was savagely interrupted in 2014 when Daesh attacked her homeland in Sinjar – with the intention of ethnically cleansing Iraq of all Yazidis. Like many minority groups, the Yazidis, have carried the weight of historical persecution. Women in particular have suffered greatly, as they have been, and continue to be victims of sexual violence.
Much of Murad’s advocacy work is focused on meeting with global leaders to raise awareness about Daesh and its genocidal campaign against the Yazidi people. Nadia’s Initiative actively works to persuade governments and other organizations to financially support efforts to rebuild the Yazidi homeland.
David J. Simon the Director of the Genocide Studies Program at Yale University, as well as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Political Science. His research focuses on the prospects of preventing mass atrocities. He has studied the Rwandan genocide in particular, addressing the reconciliation process, post-genocide justice, and the roles of international actors in Rwanda. Dr. Simon has served as a consultant to the United Nations’ Office of the Special Advisor for the Prevention of Genocide on several occasions.
This event is the keynote address of the Yazidi Genocide: Prosecution, Protection, and Preservation Symposium. The symposium, organized by the Genocide Studies Program at Yale University, intends to examine the challenges facing the Yazidi people in the wake of the attempted genocide against the Yazidi initiated by ISIL in August 2014. Presentations may explore novel conceptual and theoretical approaches as well as case studies with broader implications.
