The Global Health Studies Program will present its Spring 2021 Global Health Studies Speaker Series. The series—organized by Jackson Professor Catherine Panter-Brick and Jackson lecturer Cara Fallon—examines transformative relationships between health and a range of fields including public policy, law, technology, international relations, scientific research, economy, journalism, and more.
The Honorable Greg Hunt, Australia’s Minister for Health and Aged Care, will discuss global health, governance, and Australia’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hunt has been minister for Health since January 2017 and has been working to deliver a world class health system for Australia. In December 2020, he added responsibility for Aged Care to his portfolio, leading the government’s response to the Aged Care Royal Commission. Hunt was Shadow Minister in the Environment portfolio between 2007 and 2013, and was Minister for the Environment between September 2013 and July 2016.
As Environment Minister, Hunt counts his key achievements as establishing Australia’s successful Emissions Reduction Fund, developing the Great Barrier Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan and $1 billion Reef Fund.
Hunt graduated from Melbourne University with First Class Honours in Law, and subsequently won a Fulbright Scholarship to complete a Masters of International Relations at Yale University.
The Zoom webinar will include introductory remarks by Professor Panter-Brick (Professor of Anthropology, Health, and Global Affairs) and Professor Robert Hecht (Professor of Clinical Epidemiology), a brief presentation by Minister Hunt, and audience Q&A moderated by Catherine Panter-Brick.
