Event description:

Over the last months, Latin America and the U.S. have experienced intense social protest in response to police and military officers’ excessive use of force. Different sectors in the Latin American societies demand structural reforms that effectively eliminate police brutality against civilians. Previous reform attempts have failed to reduce the illegal use of force by law enforcement agents, negatively affecting police and military institutions’ legitimacy in the continent. This panel opens a discussion around the continent’s social unrest, challenges, and potential routes of action based on their work in Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Perú, and the United States, among other countries.
Panelists:
Tom R. Tyler, Macklin Fleming Professor of Law and Psychology, Yale University
Lucía Dammert, Professor of International Relations, Universidad Santiago de Chile
Yanilda Gonzalez, Assistant Professor of Public Policy, Harvard Kennedy School
Moderators:
Norberto Hernández, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana
Ángela Zorro Medina, Yale Law School-University of Chicago
