How is architectural “monumentality” and “palatiality” relevant in the 21st century? What role does “centrality” play in the cities of today? How does the legacy of socialist modernity shape our understanding, experience, and conceptualization of the city? Join scholars, architects, and artists for the launch of the volume Re-Centring the City: Global Mutations of Socialist Modernity, co-edited by Jonathan Bach and Michal Murawski. This transdisciplinary volume frames global high modernity through the lens of the socialist city, refracting London, Mexico City and Chennai through the prism of Moscow, Kyiv, Simferopol and the former Polish shtetls (among others). By re-centering the experiences of the ‘Global East’ it challenges our understanding of world urbanism. The event features special guest comments from Solomon Benjamin, Keller Easterling, Jennifer Robinson, and Kimberly Zarecor and short interventions from many of the book’s authors from around the world.
