Bringing the Greek Diaspora into the Classroom: Maria Kaliambou Presents at Global D.E.L.EXO. Conference
Maria Kaliambou participated in the 1st International Conference of the Special Interest Group D.E.L.EXO. (Teaching Greek Abroad), held online from 5–7 February 2026. The conference brought together educators and scholars from around the world, fostering dialogue between pedagogical practice, educational policy, and current research.
In her paper, “Teaching Greek Diaspora in a Language Classroom,” Kaliambou argued that diaspora studies are a vital component of foreign language instruction. She explored ways in which diaspora-related topics can be integrated into language teaching and developed into a stand-alone language course. Drawing on her teaching experience, she presented pedagogical practices including an ethnographic oral-history project, cultural field trips engaging local diaspora communities, and a Greek American studies course, highlighting how its content and methodologies can be adapted for the foreign language classroom.
During the conference, Maria Kaliambou was announced as a new member of the Steering Committee of D.E.L.EXO. (Teaching Greek Abroad) and looks forward to contributing to ongoing dialogue among stakeholders in Greek language education abroad.
