Maria Kaliambou to Present at Modern Greek Studies Association Workshop

On Saturday, October 25, Hellenic Studies Senior Lector II Maria Kaliambou will serve as a panelist in the Modern Greek Studies Association Pedagogy Workshop, hosted by Boston University’s Department of Classical Studies and Modern Greek Program.

In conversation with faculty from Indiana University, the University of Athens, and Ohio State University, the panel will explore the theme “Cultural Studies, Literature, and History in Curriculum.” Professor Kaliambou’s presentation, titled Teaching Greek Diaspora in the United States, will draw from her popular course The Greek Diaspora in the United States, which examines the history and culture of Greek Americans from the late 19th century to the present.

A central feature of the course is an oral history project in which students receive training from university experts, design interview protocols, and conduct Zoom interviews with Greek Americans in the New Haven area. Students maintain reflective journals, transcribe their interviews, and produce analytical papers that integrate qualitative data and personal insights. These materials contribute to Yale’s first electronic oral history archive of the Greek community in Connecticut.

The course provides a space for both heritage learners and students from other diasporic backgrounds to explore questions of identity, migration, and cultural continuity.

Professor Kaliambou, a 2025–26 fellow at the Whitney Humanities Center, has received numerous honors, including the 2024 Modern Greek Studies Association Best Edited Book Prize.
