Allison Spencer Hartnett is completing her DPhil (PhD) in Politics from the University of Oxford. Allison’s research uses mixed quantitative and qualitative approaches to study authoritarian politics, historical institutions, and the political economy of state building and redistribution. Her dissertation forms the basis of a book project which examines the relationship between colonial legacies, land redistribution, and political instability in the MENA region.

Allison holds an MPhil in Modern Middle Eastern studies (2013) from St. Antony’s College, University of Oxford and a BA in Islamic studies and Middle East history from Boston University (2009). Her research has been supported by the American Center for Oriental Research, the Centre for British Research in the Levant, and the Harvard Kennedy School Middle East Initiative where she was a pre-doctoral fellow for the 2017-2018 academic year.
