SASC Faculty seek Student Research Assistant for public health project involving Hindi
Job description:
We are seeking a motivated student research assistant to support a mixed-methods research project investigating infectious disease terminology and explanatory frameworks in Hindi across Uttar Pradesh, India. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to culturally informed public health research that bridges linguistics, medical anthropology, and epidemiology. The research assistant will work closely with faculty members at the MacMillan Center to explore how Hindi-speaking communities conceptualize, describe, and respond to infectious diseases. Responsibilities include conducting systematic analysis of disease terminology variations across Uttar Pradesh, transcribing and translating Hindi-language interviews and focus group discussions collected by field teams, and assisting with qualitative data coding and thematic analysis using an inductive approach. The candidate will contribute to developing a comprehensive dictionary of infectious disease terminology with associated explanatory frameworks for how communities conceptualize health conditions. The role offers valuable experience in global health research methods, qualitative analysis, and the intersection of language and public health policy.
Job requirements:
- Fluency in Hindi (reading and writing).
- Knowledge of the geography, culture, and social dynamics of Uttar Pradesh / Northern India.
- Ability to work independently.
- Demonstrated interest in South Asian studies, public health, linguistics, or medical anthropology
- Familiarity with qualitative data analysis software (e.g., NVivo, ATLAS.ti, MAXQDA) preferred but not required.
