Event description:

David Cameron in Conversation with Joao Rodrigues, EU Visiting Fellow and Senior Legal Counsel of the European Parliament on Food regulation in the EU vs the US

Rodrigues is the EU Visiting Fellow of the European Studies Council at the MacMillan Center, Yale. He is a senior lawyer in the Legal Service of the European Parliament in Brussels, since 2005. He provides legal counsel in the following policy areas: energy, the environment, food safety, and telecommunications. The Legal Service advises 751 members of European Parliament, the committees, and all the Parliament’s bodies regarding European law; aides in the drafting of legislation; and represents the Parliament before the European Court of Justice and national courts.

The talk will provide meaningful answers to critical areas of international public policy. How does science interplay with policy choices? Is a precautionary principle approach killing innovation? By discussing the different approaches taken by the EU and the US in areas like Genetically Modified products, the aim of this conversation is to identify and question the degree of difference between these two blocks and reflect on the future of food regulation.
