Chitrangada Choudhury

Chitrangada Choudhury is an Indian journalist, filmmaker and geographer, currently on a visiting fellowship (2026-27) at the Program in Agrarian Studies, Yale University. She has been a Fulbright-Nehru Fellow at Columbia University, a Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellow at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, a New India Foundation Fellow, and Associate Professor of Practice in Environmental Studies at Krea University. She was part of the founding editorial collective of The People's Archive of Rural India and is on the editorial board of Article 14 - two award-winning digital outlets. 

Her reportage on environmental justice and rural, in particular Indigenous communities, has been named for multiple awards including the Sanskriti Foundation Award (2008), the Press Council of India's National Award for Investigative Reporting (2016), the Lorenzo Natali Journalism Prize (2010 and 2018) and the Ramnath Goenka Award for Science & Technology Reporting (2021). Her research has appeared in edited volumes and journals including ‘Elementa – Science of the Anthropocene', and 'Capitalism, Nature, Socialism’. 

Her documentary film Seed Stories (2024) narrates a remarkable effort to conserve over 1500 heirloom rice varieties in a landscape of indigenous communities rich in agroecological knowledge, being reshaped by the coming of GM seeds and herbicides. Seed Stories has had close to a hundred screenings since its release - from villages in the Niyamgiri mountains to film festivals, educational and cultural institutions in India, Italy, USA, UK, Canada and Switzerland, including the Kolkata People's Film Festival and the Give Peace A Screen Festival, Torino. She is currently working on a book of narrative reportage about forest communities on the frontlines of environmental justice in eastern and central India.
