Hannah Engel
Hannah (she/her) is an undergraduate student in Benjamin Franklin College. She was born in New York City and raised in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She is studying Global Affairs and pursuing advanced language study in Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese. Hannah is interested in understanding the changing trends in governance, democracy, and human rights in Central and South America, particularly relating to democratic backsliding and authoritarian resurgence, corruption and judicial reform, transitional justice, and indigenous rights and autonomy movements. As a research assistant in the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Sociology, she engaged with research on the challenges women face in social and professional settings within South American countries. She hopes to use this knowledge to inform her understanding of social contexts underlying modern political movements in the region.
