Ancient Latin America Lectures

Overview

Yale University has long been a leader in the study of ancient Latin America, with pioneering scholars like Hiram Bingham, Irving Rouse, Wendell Bennett, Michael Coe, George Kubler, and Mary Miller shaping the field. Today, that tradition continues through the work of faculty such as Dr. Richard Burger and Dr. Oswaldo Chinchilla and their students. The Ancient Latin America Lectures, supported by the Edward J. and Dorothy Clarke Kempf Memorial Fund, build on this legacy by inviting innovative scholars to present emerging research from diverse disciplinary perspectives—including paleoethnobotany, geoarchaeology, ethnoarchaeology, and ceramic analysis—on topics ranging from Maya rulership at Buenavista del Cayo to the complex social and political systems of the Amazon basin.
