Message from the Director:
Thank you for visiting our program’s website. We are a new MacMillan Center program recently founded in July 2025. Our program is currently working with community leaders and stakeholders in several low-resource sites across the world, with plans to develop tools for communities and in particular, community researchers. Resources for community research ethics training have been developed and a process standardized in high-resource settings; however, this is nonexistent for the most vulnerable to research misconduct globally. Please see our recently published article highlighting this need and this new program intent. Thank you again for visiting today, and please return to see updates and program resources.
Mission Statement:
Our mission for the MacMillan Program in Global Participatory Research and Ethics is to advance equity in human subject’s research by co-developing a culturally and linguistically adaptive ethics training framework, along with resources, for community-based researchers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
Program Objectives:
-
Identify current available resources in ethics training for community researchers in low-and middle-income countries, highlighting current gaps
-
Develop multi-site program in regions with ongoing community research projects (Guatemala, Uganda, and Ethiopia) and co-develop community research ethics training programs utilizing principles of Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR)
-
Investigate program methods and consolidate resources developed over-time.
-Identify core themes and processes
-Create a framework to guide program development
-
Serve as a global hub for Global Participatory Researchers who work in rural, limited resource settings, providing:
-Open access to all available resources and research documents;
-Open access to core leadership team for questions and advising;
-Opportunities for partnership in scholarship;
-Resources to develop ethics training process through external institutional review boards;
-Collaborative network of participatory researchers across Yale University;
-
Advance training for students, other trainees, and faculty:
-by providing scholarship opportunities in ethics via ‘ethics scholars’ program;
-Hosting bi-annual workshops/conferences and quarterly meetings.
