Over the course of two days, emerging scholars in the humanities and social sciences who have completed all coursework and fieldwork and are in the process of writing and submitting their dissertations come together for two days of discussion, connection, and inspiration. Participation is competitive – those who are selected submit a full paper to share with all participants, and the Yale faculty discussants. The workshops are held in the region of focus, but participants are international, adding dimension and perspective to the activities.
Aimed at fostering new theoretical and methodological alternatives in the study of the region, past papers have focused on myriad topics, including film and ethnomusicology, groundwater extraction, state formation and elections, and more.
