Brief Description:

The Committee on Canadian Studies at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies announces the availability of a limited amount of summer funding to support undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students to conduct research overseas or in the US on topics pertaining to the study of Canada. Research across all disciplines will be considered, provided that the focus is on Canada. Applications open October 1, 2026 and close March 5, 2027.

Description:

The Committee on Canadian Studies at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies announces the availability of a limited amount of summer funding to support undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students to conduct research overseas or in the US on topics pertaining to the study of Canada. Research across all disciplines will be considered, provided that the focus is on Canada. Note that research in Canada on topics that do not examine Canada will not be eligible for this funding.

Funds may be used to cover or supplement expenses including, but not limited to, travel and accommodation, access to paid databases and/or services, attendance at Canada-related events or conferences, and collaboration with other academics. The maximum award for research projects is $3,500, while the maximum for conferences is $1,000.

PhD students (only) interested in applying to present at a conference on Canadian Studies-related topics should submit their application for the MacMillan Center International Conference Travel Grants and include a note in a brief description that they would like to be considered for the Canadian Studies Grant.

Grants are available to all current undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students. This is a competitive award; not everyone will be awarded grant funds. Recipients will be expected to submit a brief report (no more than a page) summarizing their experiences and planned next steps in early fall.

A complete application MUST include the following:
 

  1. A current CV.
  2. An itemized budget that justifies the requested funding amount. Please include the name and amount of any additional funding sources supporting the project.https://calendly.com/anja-koirala
  3. A proposal including: 
  • A brief description (up to 500 words) of the proposed project for which you seek funding. If the project involves travel, please include the cities/towns to which you will travel, approximate dates, and the number of travel days in total.
  • A brief description (up to 500 words) of how the proposed project will positively impact your academic research and/or planned future career/
  • A brief description (up to 500 words) of how you hope to share results/material from the proposed project with the Yale Canadian Studies community.


Applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision by mid April.
