Irish Worlds Seminar

The Irish Worlds Seminar working group focuses on issues in modern Irish literature, culture, economy and politics conceived in terms of domestic and international conjunctures and contexts. Its ambition is to cultivate ambitious intellectual scholarship and exchange on topics situated at the intersection of any number of Irish worlds. To this end, the seminar supports invited lectures, symposia, literary readings, and cultural events on topics of this nature.  In 2024-25, the group studied the relationship between the decline and attempted revival of the Irish language in Ireland in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries and the distinctive linguistic and stylistic vitality of Irish literary modernism in that period. In 2025-26, it hosted Yale events featuring scholars from the US, Ireland, and elsewhere: speakers included Barry McCrea, Christopher Dowd, Emer Nolan, Michael Cronin, Carol Tell Morse, David Lloyd, Suvij Sudershan, and Heather Laird. In 2026 and 2027, the group plans to extend its range of activities and welcomes new members, ideas, and collaborations across Yale humanities, the wider region, and internationally.
