Fellowships & Grants
Each year, the Council on East Asian Studies (CEAS) awards grants to Yale University students for language study and research abroad related to the study of East Asia. These include the CEAS Summer Language Mini-Grants, Summer Travel & Research Grants, Field Research Grants, Charles Kao Fund Research Grants, and CEAS Senior Essay Research Grants.
The Council on East Asian studies also offers fellowships to Ph.D. students whose dissertation research uses a significant amount of Chinese, Japanese, and/or Korean materials: The Prize Fellowship in East Asian Studies and the Dissertation Fellowship in East Asian Studies. These fellowships cannot be applied for; nomination from the faculty advisor is required.
The Hotel Shilla Research Fellowship is made possible through the generosity of Lee Boo-jin, the CEO of Hotel Shilla and aimed at enriching and fortifying Korean Studies at Yale. This prestigious fellowship offers invaluable opportunities for Yale’s undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty members to elevate their research experiences in Korea.
CEAS is also currently accepting applications for grants to support research utilizing the Noriaki Tsuchimoto Papers housed in Manuscripts & Archives in the Yale University Library. The collection is currently comprised of 83 boxes containing materials related to the filmmaking and other activities of the Japanese documentary filmmaker Noriaki Tsuchimoto (1928-2008), who is most famous for recording the struggles over the Minamata mercury poisoning incident and other environmental hazards. The Richard U. Light Fellowship Program fully funds Yale undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students pursuing intensive language study in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean for terms ranging from a single summer to a combined summer plus academic year. Light Fellows undertake rigorous language training alongside intense cultural immersion that prepares them for a lifelong engagement with East Asia.
