Making a Discovery: The Journey to the Leptin hormone.

Dr. Jeffrey Friedman is a physician scientist studying the genetic mechanisms that regulate body weight and the neural mechanisms by which leptin regulates appetite. Dr. Friedman’s research on various aspects of obesity received national attention in late 1994, when it was announced that he and his colleagues had isolated the mouse obgene and its human homologue, which encodes the hormone leptin. Dr. Friedman was elected to the National Academy of Science (2001) from which he received the Kovalenko Medal. He has received the Gairdner International Award (2005), Keio Medical Science Prize (2009), Shaw Prize (2009), the Lasker Basic Award, (2010) and an honorary degree from Yale University (2015), among others. His work was referred to in Time Magazine’s Best of Science Section in 1995 and 1996. He has also received Popular Science’s Best of Science Award in 1995,the Alumnus of the Year Award in 1996 from Albany Medical College, and the Heinrich Wieland Prize.
