Aman Kumar

Aman Kumar is a PhD Candidate at The Australian National University. His thesis focuses on India's colonization through the trial of the last Mughal Emperor of India-Bahadur Shah Zafar. Aman critiques Zafar's classification as a 'British Subject' and his trial by the British East India Company (EIC). Aman is looking at the Indian archives, Mughal court practices, British parliamentary debates and legislations to explain the role played by the EIC in the working and formation of international law and in India's colonisation. He is also looking at how sovereignty was divided between the EIC and the British Crown. Aman adopts an interdisciplinary approach for his research and focuses on legal and historical aspects of the trial and the formation of international law. 

 

He has published works on the historical and contemporary issues of international law in the American Journal of International Law, Asian Journal of International Law, Cambridge International Law Journal, International Criminal Law Review etc. Aman has a dual degree in Arts and Law (BALLB) from NLUJA, Assam and an LLM from the South Asian University. He hosts the 'IL-Literate: An International Law Podcast' and writes regularly on contemporary issues of international law on his 'Indian Blog of International Law'.
