Sydney Gordon

Translation Initiative Certificate

Sydney Gordon is a graduating senior in Saybrook College. During her time at Yale, she majored in English and took several courses that centered around the translation of ancient languages, primarily Latin and Old English. Her senior thesis, which was awarded third place for the Richard Maxwell Prize for Translation and Translation Studies, considers the metaphorical models of translation suggested by the translation episodes in Ovid's Metamorphoses, and evaluates to what extent the great English translators of the text internalize and follow these models. This coming October, Sydney will begin an MPhil in Classics at the University of Cambridge.
