Jacob Ross
Transcription: The Bearer of this, Jacob Ross, a Negro man, late the property of John McClelland (Deceased) has my permission to go to Salem, in Roanoke County, to return by the first of November next. All persons will permit him to pass unmolested. He has been emancipated by the will of his late Master, who died in the Month of July last, but has not yet received his Certificate of Freedom. He is about forty years of age–is near six feet in height, & has a large scar on his breast. He goes to Salem to see Mr. John M. Wilson of that place, who owns his wife, whose freedom he wishes to make arrangement to purchase.
