Eligibility
The Fox Fellowship is open to graduate and professional school students at Yale University. Students in doctoral programs should be finished with their coursework and students in masters or graduate professional programs should have administrative approval to interrupt their course work. Graduating masters and professional school students are eligible to apply. Graduating seniors of unusual distinction and with clearly focused research may also be considered. The Fox Fellowship places a strong emphasis on communicative competence in the host country language(s) to truly engage colleagues and establish long term personal relationships with people from the Fox Partner University and the larger community of that University and the overall Fox alumni/ae network.
Selection Process
The faculty selection committee evaluates applications based on:
- Personal character and leadership: You must demonstrate commitment to serious research and a capacity for leadership and civic engagement. The committee seeks scholars who understand and embody the role of a "citizen scholar" ambassador, conducting academic work with practical solutions to global challenges.
- Strength of academic achievement: You must demonstrate excellence in relevant coursework and strong research ability in your proposed field.
- Quality of research proposal and fit with Fox focus: Your project must align clearly with partner university resources and Fox Fellowship goals. Strong projects focus on international relations, global affairs, environmental policy, public health, business and finance, sociology, economics, political science, political theory, law, and contemporary history, with preference for topics of contemporary, applied, or institutional relevance.
- Language skills: You must demonstrate sufficient mastery of the host country's language(s) to thrive locally and engage with the academic community. Students without these skills may still apply.

Required materials:
- Research proposal
- Leadership statement
- Recent curriculum vitae
- Transcript
- Two faculty recommendation letters
- Attestation of sufficient language proficiency
You must submit two letters from faculty members at accredited academic institutions. Letters from postdoctoral researchers, lecturers without faculty status, or research staff do not satisfy this requirement. You may optionally submit a third letter from a postdoc or non-faculty mentor, but this does not replace the two faculty letters.

Fellowship Details
The fellowship provides round-trip travel, a stipend for living expenses, and support for research-related travel. The fellowship period runs 9 to 12 months, beginning in late August or at the start of the partner university's academic year. Stipend amounts vary based on partner university location and your other resources.
