Exchange Partner Students: Application Information

The Fox Fellowship brings graduate and professional school students from our partner universities to conduct research at Yale University. If you're a Yale student interested in studying abroad, go here.

Application Timeline:

Deadlines: Varies by partner university (typically January or February)
Notification of awards: Mid-April

Selection Process

You do not apply directly to Yale. Instead, each Fox partner university holds its own annual competition to select and nominate the strongest candidates to be Fox Fellows at Yale. Yale's selection committee then makes the final decision based on established criteria.

Application deadlines and procedures vary by partner university. Contact your university's Fox coordinator for specific information about your institution's timeline and requirements.

Selection Criteria

Yale's selection committee evaluates nominations based on:

Quality of research proposal: Your project should align with Fox focus areas—international relations, global affairs, environmental policy, public health, business and finance, sociology, economics, political science, political theory, law, and contemporary history—with preference for topics of contemporary, applied, or institutional relevance.

Strength of academic achievement: You must demonstrate excellence in relevant coursework and strong research ability in your field.

Personal character and leadership: You must demonstrate commitment to serious research and capacity for leadership and civic engagement. The committee seeks scholars who understand and embody the role of a "citizen scholar" ambassador—conducting academic work with practical solutions to global challenges.

Language skills: You must demonstrate sufficient English proficiency to succeed in graduate-level research and engage in the intellectual and social community at Yale. You will need to provide recent TOEFL or IELTS scores (generally TOEFL 100 or IELTS 7.0 is considered strong). This requirement is waived for applicants from partner institutions where English is the primary language of instruction.

Eligibility

The Fox Fellowship is open to graduate students pursuing doctoral or master’s degrees at Fox partner universities. Because each partner university reviews and nominates its own candidates, eligibility rules may vary, so check with your Fox coordinator. Due to US visa restrictions, students must be enrolled in a degree-granting program at their partner university for the duration of the fellowship. Postdoctoral researchers and international students proposing projects in their home country are not eligible.
