FAQs

Are there information sessions about the award?

Yes. Sign up for the Fox Fellowship newsletter for updates on the Fellowship.

Who should I contact?

For any question regarding applications and administrative issues, please contact Julia Muravnik.

How many applications do you receive? What are your acceptance rates?

We usually receive more than 50 applications from students at Yale for Fellowships at partner institutions. We select at least one Fellow to travel to each of our partner institutions, but we may send more than one if the applicant pool is particularly strong. Applicants are prescreened by exchange partners and forwarded to Yale for final consideration.

We accept at least one Fellow from each of our partner institutions, approximately 20 in all, but we may take more than one if the applicant pool is particularly strong. Please contact the coordinator at the partner institution for a more accurate picture of the competition there.

Are there funds available for events?

Yes; at the discretion of the Fellowship administration, funds may be made available to host an event at the partner institution provided that it has a clear link to the aims of the Fellowship.

How may I use the research travel fund?

Fellows may apply to the research travel fund to reimburse costs associated with transport and accommodation for academic activities in which the Fellow engages in the region of the exchange partner. While it is not possible to use the research travel fund to conduct research in your home country, it may be possible to apply to the fund in order to present major conferences there. Please note that the research travel fund does not cover food or clothing, and the Fellow must make a presentation of their work in order to be eligible for conference funding.

If I am a graduating senior or Master’s student from Yale, how will I be registered?

The Yale Graduate School, facilitated by the Fox program, will register Fellows that are graduating seniors, Masters students, JD and JSD students as VARs at Yale for the duration of the fellowship.

If I am applying from a Fox exchange partner university, must I apply to Yale separately to receive the fellowship?

No. Acceptance to the Fox International Fellowship includes registration with Yale as a Visiting Assistant in Research (VAR).

Are interviews required?

Interviews may be conducted at the discretion of exchange partners. Yale also reserves the right to interview applicants.

Can I receive extra funding for my family to join me?

In addition to visa support for spouses and children, Fox Fellowship will provide a financial subsidy to fellows bringing a child/children to the United States. The final amount will be determined on a case-by-case basis. Please note that the U.S. government also requires proof of health insurance for the entire family.

Will Yale sponsor visas for my spouse and/or children in the U.S.?

Yes, Yale will help you support your visa application for spouse and children but we cannot provide funding for their travel, living or health care expenses. You may be required to prove that you can support them during your stay at the exchange partner.

Will Yale sponsor my visa?

Yale will sponsor you for a J-1 Visa.  Yale will also sponsor spouses and children for J-2 dependent visa(s).

What is the duration of the Fellowship for Yale students going to Fox partner universities?

The Fellowship lasts for 10 months. We recommend that Fellows’ stays coincide with the academic year at the partner institution, though we recognize that there are reasons why this might not always be advantageous. Please contact Julia Muravnik for more information.

What is the duration of the Fellowship for students coming to Yale from Fox partner universities?

The Fellowship is 10 months, beginning mid-August each year.

How much is the fellowship award for Fellows coming to Yale from Fox partner universities?

All Fellows at Yale receive the same award, which is commensurate to the level of funding received by doctoral students in the graduate school.  Awards include round-trip travel, accommodations in rental housing provided by the Fox Fellowship and a generous living stipend to cover expenses not already provided for by existing funds that you may have at your disposal. The Fellowship will also cover health insurance. All fellows are also able to apply for grants from a research travel fund up to U.S.D $2000.

I am a French national as a Yale graduate student. Can I use a Fox Fellowship to spend a year doing research at Sciences Po’ in Paris, France?

No, Fox will not send nationals to their home countries for the Fox Fellowship. You may apply for any of the other Fox partner universities in other countries and do your project focused on your home country.

Can I apply for a project in my home country if I’m a student at a Fox exchange partner university?
