“The Aegean Sea and Islands: Biodiversity Hotspots Under Threat”
The presentation will discuss marine habitats and species (e.g., mammals, turtles, sharks and coralligene reefs) in the Aegean Sea region, which are being threatened by anthropogenic activities, such as overfishing and pollution. The presentation will also cover issues affecting forestry conservation on the Greek islands and rare island fauna (e.g., migratory birds, jackals and chameleons) that are under threat from activities such as unsustainable tourism and poor policy making. Archipelagos will also share ways for students, researchers and academics (who may be interested) to participate in Archipelagos’ research and conservation efforts, highlighting current collaborations and actions. Projects currently being carried out with students at the Yale Environmental Protection Clinic will also be highlighted. The presentation is co-sponsored by the Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation, the Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy, the Yale Environmental Law clinic and the Hellenic Studies Program at Yale University.
Speaker: Anastasia Miliou, Manager and Head Scientist of the Greek NGO Archipelagos, Institute of Marine Conservation, and Charlene Caprio, Attorney and Legal consultant for Archipelagos, Institute of Marine Conservation
