Zorba The Greek

Michalis Cacoyannis’s iconic film, based on Nikos Kazantzakis’s novel The Life and Times of Alexis Zorbas, has shaped foreign perceptions of the exuberant and quintessentially Dionysian Greek for generations. Set on the island of Crete, the film follows the ultimately failed commercial and amorous adventures of its two main characters, climaxing in a frenzied celebration of failure and loss. The film was nominated for an Oscar and won in the categories of Best Supporting actress (Lila Kedrova), Best Art Direction (Vassilis Photopoulos), and Best Cinematography (Walter Lassaly).
