When I think of Shivi, I think of this vibrant forest garden whose many roots, branches, canopies have stewarded generations of scholars towards purposeful environmental work. “Tending the Banyan” is a beautiful evocation of Shivi’s worldbuilding scholarship in South Asia and beyond. His legacy flows like a river of wisdom for us, across disciplines like History, Anthropology, and Forestry, fostering a breathtaking diversity of perspectives and methods for scholars to come. To me, Shivi’s mentorship over the years has been an invaluable gift. Words cannot measure up, but I hope I can reciprocate this gift by being true to our craft and students, just as Shivi has. May the Banyan flourish, and may we continue to dream and work for environmentally just futures.
