Undergraduate
The South Asian Studies Council offers a variety of courses at the undergraduate level, as well as a major in South Asian Studies. Students interested in South Asia can take courses spanning a variety of academic disciplines, including political science, economics, art history, anthropology, religious studies and literature. Those seeking to study languages can take courses in Sanskrit and Hindi. Other South Asian languages can be studied through the Center for Language Study. A list of courses offered in the current academic year can be found here. Students interested in the major or with questions about South Asian Studies should contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Jane Lynch.
The South Asian Studies Major
The program in South Asian Studies combines the requirements of a discipline-based first major with significant course work in South Asian studies. South Asian Studies can be taken only as a second major and is intended to provide students with a broad understanding of the history, culture, and languages of South Asia as well as the region’s current social, political, and economic conditions. Work in a discipline-based major coupled with a focus on South Asia prepares students for graduate study, employment in nongovernmental organizations, or business and professional careers in which an understanding of South Asia is essential. The interdisciplinary nature of the South Asian Studies major permits students to choose courses from a wide range of disciplines. Among the requirements of the South Asian Studies major are: seven term courses (at least two pre-modern), a senior essay, and the study of one South Asian language at the advanced level (courses designated L5). More information about the requirements of the major can be found in the Yale College Programs of Study (“blue book”), also available online http://catalog.yale.edu/ycps/subjects-of-instruction/south-asian-studies/.
