PRFDHR and LIFFY Film: Diáspora - Movie Screening and Q&A with Film Director Héctor Valdez
Movie screening Sunday, November 5th, 2023 (in-person; 5:30pm; 64mn) followed immediately after by Q&A session (in-person; 6:35pm; 25mn).
“Diaspora” is a documentary about the formation of Caribbean identity through culture, ideas and art as it traveled, mixed and communicated within the migration to and from the region. It features interviews from the likes of Julia Alvarez (In the Time of the Butterflies), as well as a visual journey across the Atlantic: from the Dominican Republic, Cuba and Puerto Rico all the way to the isle of Goree in Dakar, Senegal.
Héctor Valdez is a Dominican filmmaker. He graduated from McGill University and screened his first full-length film, ‘Al Sur de la Inocencia’, at the International Film Festival Rotterdam-Curaçao and the AFI Latin American Film Festival. In 2014, he co-founded Bou Group, a film production company based in Santo Domingo. His second film, ‘Melocotones’ (2017), won the Raindance Festival (UK). He also directed ‘Malpaso’ (2020), which premiered at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and was part of the Málaga Film Festival´s Official Selection. Diáspora is his most recent film.
