Raphael Pouye

With a focus on Kosovo and East Timor, Mr. Pouy will research the recently prevalent phenomena of semi-sovereign territories whose nation-building experiences do not fit the existing research on state formation and nationalism. The experiences of "self-made" states of Kosovo and East Timor demonstrate the simultaneous role played by domestic state formation mechanisms and external lobbying for international intervention. Mr. Pouy believes that these patterns are likely to be observed elsewhere and that their study can yield important practical teachings for the future of multilateral intervention.
