Christopher Tounsel is Chair of African Studies and associate professor of History at the University of Washington. A historian of modern Sudan, he is the author of Chosen Peoples: Christianity and Political Imagination in South Sudan (Duke University Press, 2021) and Bounds of Blackness: African Americans, Sudan, and the Politics of Solidarity (Cornell University Press, 2024). Dr. Tounsel has provided commentary on Sudan for venues including the BBC, Al Jazeera, and Christianity Today.
