Library Resources and Collections

Yale University Library was among the first in the United States to collect Slavic materials systematically. Joel Sumner Smith, its Associate Librarian in the late 19th century, was one of the very few in his profession who read Russian. The books and serials he acquired today form the core of one of the major holdings in the west. Materials from Russia and Eastern Europe are found throughout the Yale University Library but are concentrated in Sterling Memorial Library. 

The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library holds one of the preeminent collections of Slavic and East European manuscripts and texts in North America. Holdings include the family albums of the Romanovs (featured on the left), the private archives of Nobel Prize-winning poets Joseph Brodsky and Czeslaw Milosz, and a vast collection of avant-garde materials from the 20th century.

DHREES is dedicated to the intersection of Digital Humanities and Russian and East European studies at Yale University. The Initiative has spearheaded a number of large-scale projects of digital scholarship, conferences, and new courses for both graduate and undergraduate students.
