Catherine Pretchel

Ph.D. Candidate in Latin American Studies at Tulane University. Her dissertation "Wrestling with Masculinities: Exploring the Intersections of Gender, Sexuality, and Nationalism Among Exóticos in Mexican Lucha Libre" is an interdisciplinary investigation of the gender performances of Mexican exótico wrestlers, their experiences creating and performing queer characters, and their interactions with discriminatory and hierarchical social structures. She is currently finishing her dissertation and is planning to graduate in August 2023. She completed her MA in Spanish & Latin American Studies at American University after completing a Fulbright fellowship as an English Teaching Assistant in León, México, from 2014-2015. She is currently participating in the Visiting Investigator Program at the Center for Gender Research and Studies (Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios de Género) at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
