Matthew Gutmann

Matthew Gutmann is Professor of Anthropology at Brown University, USA. The main topics of his research and teaching are men and masculinities, public health, political economy and militarism. Among his books are Being a real man in Mexico City: Neither macho nor mandilón (Colegio de México, 2000); The Romance of Democracy: Submissive Rebellion in Contemporary Mexico (Fondo de Cultura Económica, 2009); For my pistols: Sexuality, contraception and AIDS in Mexico (Siglo Veintiuno Editores, 2016). His PhD is from the University of California, Berkeley (1995), and from Berkeley he has a Master of Public Health (1997) and a BA (1975) in Modern and Classical Chinese. He has been a visiting professor in China, Spain, France, Mexico and Thailand. He has just finished a project with Mexfam on reproductive health among young men in Mexico City and is starting another on men and suicide in China, Mexico and the US.
