Yale’s Council on Latin American & Iberian Studies and COMEXUS Launch the Fulbright-García Robles Visiting Chair Fellowship at Yale University

The Fulbright-García Robles Fellowship, a program of the United States-Mexico Commission for Educational and Cultural Exchange (COMEXUS), was established in 2016 with the aim of enhancing awareness of Mexico and its bilateral relationship with the United States. This initiative seeks to forge and strengthen connections between American and Mexican universities, as well as among faculty and students on both sides of the border. One notable opportunity within this program is the chance for distinguished social scientists and humanists to teach courses on Mexico at prestigious institutions.

Yale University has announced that it will collaborate with COMEXUS to host the Fulbright-García Robles Mexico Studies Chair for the next five years, beginning in the 2024-25 academic year.

“The collaboration between COMEXUS and Yale University marks a significant milestone in fostering cultural exchange and academic enrichment,” COMEXUS Executive Director Hazel Blackmore Sanchez said. “The establishment of the Fulbright-García Robles Mexico Studies Visiting Chair at Yale University brings together the expertise of Mexican scholars with the esteemed academic environment at Yale. This initiative not only will enhance the global perspective of Yale students but also will strengthen the bonds between Mexico and the United States. The dedicated Fulbright-García Robles scholars, teaching on Mexican issues for one term, will contribute to a dynamic cross-cultural dialogue, fostering understanding and promoting the richness of Mexican studies. This collaboration exemplifies the power of international cooperation in advancing education and deepening connections between nations.”

COMEXUS has announced an open call for applications for Mexican scholars interested in teaching in the United States for a semester . At Yale, the selected fellow will be based within the Council on Latin American & Iberian Studies (CLAIS) at the Yale MacMillan Center.

Claudia Valeggia, professor in the Department of Anthropology and chair of Council on Latin American & Iberian Studies, said,  “I am delighted we are partnering with La Comisión México-Estados Unidos para el Intercambio Educativo y Cultural (COMEXUS) to support Visiting Professors from Mexico for the next five years as part of our Latin American Studies major at CLAIS. We are excited to welcome faculty and scholars into our community to support our undergraduate and graduate student networks and to support their research during their time at Yale as well.”

The ideal candidate is an established researcher with extensive experience in both research and full-time teaching at a Mexican higher education institution, specializing in areas such as anthropology, political science, economics, history, or the humanities. They should have the capability to teach an introductory course related to Latin American Studies and present a course program as part of their application. Applications from scholars in various disciplines are encouraged, particularly those showcasing an interdisciplinary or collaborative approach to research and teaching.
