Identity and Politics in Xi Jinping's China
NPR international correspondent Emily Feng spent nearly a decade reporting in China and Taiwan and talks about her new book of essays and reportage called "Let Only Red Flowers Bloom." Feng will discuss on-the-ground reporting conditions in China over the last few years in Xi's China and how the book's theme of identity dovetails with China's national security and foreign policy priorities.
Emily Feng is an award-winning international correspondent for NPR covering China, Taiwan and beyond. Previously a foreign correspondent for The Financial Times, she lived in Beijing from 2015 to 2022, and then Taiwan from 2022 to 2024. Recipient of the Daniel Schorr Journalism Prize and the Shorenstein Journalism Award, Feng is the author of Let Only Red Flowers Bloom (Crown, 2025). She lives in Washington D.C.
