2021-2022 Williams Prize Award

The Council on East Asian Studies is happy to announce the winners of the 2022 Williams Prize Competition: 

Stella Xu (Berkeley College) for her essay submitted to the East Asian Studies Program, “Hands Join Across Polluted Waters: Translocal Solidarity and Tsuchimoto Noriaki’s Minamata Films.” 

Isabella Yang (Saybrook College) for her essay submitted to the Department of History, “Wang Xitian and the Chinese Experience in Imperial Tokyo, 1899-1923: Class, Violence, and the Formation of a New National Consciousness.” 

Honorable Mention

Abigail Long (Jonathan Edwards College) for her essay submitted to the East Asian Studies Program, “China’s Rare Earth Element Sector: Environmental Perils and Promise in Baotou, Inner Mongolia.” 

Anna McClain-Sims (Silliman College) for her essay submitted to the Department of East Asian Languages & Literatures, “The Female Gaze Examined through Queer Women’s Manga.”

Eun Ji Yoo (Trumbull College) for her essay submitted to the East Asian Studies Program, “Criminalizing Criticism: Defamation Law and Free Expression in the Aftermath of the Sewol Ferry Sinking.” 

We extend heartfelt congratulations to Stella, Isabella, Abigail, Anna, and Eun Ji.  We would also like express our gratitude to all those who participated in this year’s competition.
