Undergraduate Student
Alex Bavalsky

Alex is a sophomore in Timothy Dwight College majoring in Ethics, Politics, & Economics and pursuing a certificate in Advanced Spanish. He is interested in studying the intersection between international relations and economics, particularly in Latin America. After taking AP and IB Spanish in high school, he continued with L5 Spanish at Yale. He has taken courses such as "Advanced Spanish Grammar" and "Borders and Globalization in Hispanophone Countries"; in the latter course, he researched nascent far-left and far-right movements in 21st century Spain, as well as the use of nationalist propaganda in Argentine and British newspapers in the 1982 Falklands War. He has previously studied abroad in Barcelona (2021, before matriculating at Yale) and worked in the energy industry in Buenos Aires (2022). He is eager to further research economic crises and paths to development and stability in Latin America, as well as the role of supranational organizations like the OAS and IMF in supporting such development. He would also like to continue studying separatist movements in the Spanish regions of Catalonia and the Basque Country, and hopes to do this next semester in Legal Spanish. In his free time, he debates for the Yale Debate Association, volunteers for the New Haven Urban Debate League, writes for the Yale Daily News, and plays tennis and chess.
