Ángel Escamilla Garcia
Ángel A. Escamilla García is Assistant Professor of Sociology. He received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University. Angel’s research broadly focuses on how vulnerable populations such as youth, indigenous people, and LGBTQ+ people experience the violence they face during their migration journeys. He is currently working on his book manuscript entitled Negotiating Violence: Central American Youth and their Precarious Journeys through Mexico, which uses his ethnographic research to explore how Central American youth migrants traveling alone across Mexico on their way to U.S. understand and respond to the constant and unpreventable violence and precariousness they face as they move. Ángel’s other research projects include a historical revision of pioneer Black sociologists’ scholarship on migration, and a mixed-methods study of how gender, race, ethnicity, and language shape the international migration experiences of Guatemalan indigenous minors. He’s also interested in the intersection of ethics and qualitative methods in studies that involve vulnerable communities. His work has been published in the Journal of Migration and Human Security and the Sociology of Race and Ethnicity, among others.
