Jean Tobar
I am a junior in Branford College studying sociocultural anthropology and Spanish literature. My interests range from indigenous sovereignty in Andean communities to diasporic migration from Latin America. I have conducted ethnographic fieldwork with migrant communities in Latin America and, most recently, traveled to Cali, Colombia–my birth city–to research the changes endured by domestic workers after the COVID-19 pandemic. At Yale, I am interested in the social performance of Latinx identity and Latinx studies as an institutional discipline. I explore these interests in my classes as well as through my position student coordinator at La Casa Cultural. I am also involved with first-generation, low-income student advocacy and volunteer for the the Yale Interpretation Network.
