Michaela Bauman
Michaela is a junior in Davenport College majoring in global affairs with certificates in Spanish and Portuguese. She serves on the board of Bridges ESL, where she teaches English to Brazilian immigrants in the New Haven area. Originally from Washington, DC, she has traveled extensively throughout Latin America, having lived with host families in Colombia, Nicaragua, Panama, and Brazil. She is drawn to Latin America’s rich history and how communities have thrived despite years of oppression and corruption. During summer 2022, she studied abroad in Rio de Janeiro, where she explored the specific challenges of Brazil, such as indigenous land demarcation, modern-day slavery, and discrimination against Afro-Brazilians.
