Bayan Abubakr

Bayan’s research at Yale focuses on indigenous understandings of race and racialization in 19th century Ottoman-Egyptian Sudan. Prior to Yale, Bayan graduated magna cum laude with high honors in History and a minor in Politics from NYU (c/o 2019). She completed a senior thesis that dissected the relationship between modern Egyptian nationalism, the construction of the Aswan High Dam, and the Nubian communities the Dam displaced through a critical analysis of contemporary Nubian literature. Over the course of her time at NYU, Bayan was a research assistant at Columbia Law School, an intern at the Brennan Center for Justice, and an intern at Tadamon–The Egyptian Refugee Multicultural Council. She was also a recipient of the Critical Language Scholarship, the Gallatin Global Fellowship in Human Rights, and the Fulbright Award.
