Project Title: Violent Aid: Perceptions of Security and Sovereignty in Mali-Russia Cooperation

Project Location: Bamako Mali

Yulia is a PhD candidate in Political Science specializing in international political economy. Her research focuses on international hierarchies, economic coercion, foreign aid, and state-building assistance. Her dissertation research examines Soviet foreign aid to countries in the Global South during the Cold War. Drawing on archival data, she investigates the logic of Soviet aid allocation and its role in shaping economic and political institutions in recipient states.
Prior to graduate study, she was a George F. Kennan Fellow at the Wilson Center and worked as a quantitative researcher at the Center for Advanced Governance in Moscow, Russia.
