Uilleam Blacker

Dr Uilleam Blacker is an Associate Professor in Ukrainian and East European Culture at University College London’s School of Slavonic and East European Studies. His research interests include contemporary Ukrainian war literature, the memory of vanished pre-war urban communities in east-central Europe, and space and place in literature. He is author of Memory, the City and the Legacy of World War II in East-Central Europe: Ghosts of Others (Routledge, 2019), co-author of Remembering Katyn (Polity, 2012) and co-editor of Memory and Theory in Eastern Europe (Palgrave Macmillan, 2013). He is currently working on a book that charts Ukraine’s remarkable multilingual literary diversity of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Dr Blacker is also a translator of Ukrainian literature and has translated the work of authors such as Mike Yohansen, Oleg Sentsov, Iryna Shuvalova, Taras Prokhasko and many others. His translations have appeared in The Guardian, PN Review, Words Without Borders, Modern Poetry in Translation, White Review and others.
