GLC Panel Discussion: “Contested Bodies: Race and Pregnancy, Past and Present"
This panel discussion will explore the historical roots of the contemporary crisis of race-based inequalities in maternal health and childbirth outcomes. With Professor Sasha Turner’s book, Contested Bodies: Pregnancy, Childrearing, and Slavery in Jamaica (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2017), as a springboard, panelists will reflect on the long history of state and medical authorities’ regulations of Black women’s reproductive lives. Connecting past with present, the conversation will address how the legacies of slavery fuel the ongoing impacts of racism and implicit bias in the medical profession.
