A Plea for Assistance

Jericho 13th of 4th Mo. 1797
Respected Friend

A Black Man that lives with Phineas Carl. Complains that he is Wronged of his Liberty he supposes that he was free born but as he was taken from his Parent when about 2 years old and Bound out, there seams (sic) at Present no Positive Proof who his Parent was. But it is generally supposed his Mother was a free Woman, but a certain person by the name of Uriah Hubbs Contracted for him with the Man where he Was first Bound or Sold, since which Hubbs has sold him as a Slave. And he has been several times sold since and Hubbs Refuses to give any assurance or make any Proof that he contracted for him as a Slave and the Man that Hubbs had him of is not Now to be found. But the Person to Whom Hubbs sold him Understood after he had Bought him that he was only a Bound Child, and was free Born, but as No Person Can be found as yet to come forwards with Positive Proof that he is free, he is still Retained in Bondage and is now near thirty years of age. And it is as I Understand that the general opinion of those that are Acquainted with the Circumstance that he is Undoubtedly a free Born Person. Therefore the Interference of the Society if they should think it Prudent and advisable. In order to make Hubbs prove his title to him as a Slave if he has any, I believe it would be an act of Justice, as the Poor black man is Very anxious for some Relief as he believes he is much Wronged.

I should be glad if thou would open the case to the Committee and advise me of your Result, by the first opportunity, as the poor Man is looking to me for some advice and assistance if any can be had. From thy assured Friend,
