Henrique Espada Lima on the End of Slavery and Slaves' Expectations of Rights in Brazil

Thomas Thurston talks with Henrique Espada Lima on his project “History of a Different Future: The End of Slavery and Slaves’ Expectations of Rights in Brazil”

Henrique Espada Lima graduated in Psychology (UFSC, 1990), received a Master in Brazilian Literature (UFSC, 1993) and a PhD in Social History of Work (Unicamp, 1999). He has been a professor in the Department of History at the Federal University of Santa Catarina since 2004, where he teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses. His areas of research and teaching include historiography, methodology and theories of history, microhistory, global history, and the contemporary history of Brazil, with an emphasis on studies of social labor history, researching the experiences and trajectories of former slaves between slavery and post-emancipation.

Dr. Lima is the author of A micro-história italiana: escalas, indícios e singularidades (2006) and  co-editor of Cruzando Fronteiras: Novos olhares sobre a história do trabalho (2013). In addition, he has written over twenty articles in academic journals and book chapters published in Brazil, Argentina, the United States, France and England.
