The inaugural Yale and Slavery Teachers Institute, scheduled for July 2025, will focus on the theme Teaching Slavery in New England. This two-week program is designed to provide educators with a deeper understanding of the region’s complex history of enslavement. During the first week, participants will engage with expert-led workshops, explore historic sites such as Mystic, Newport, and Providence, and utilize exhibits and resources to uncover the narratives of enslaved individuals and their legacies. The second week emphasizes hands-on curriculum development, with opportunities for educators to revise their lesson plans, collaborate with peers, and address critical topics such as the portrayal of slavery in literature and visual media. Tailored for K-12 teachers, this landmark institute aims to equip educators with the tools to foster thoughtful, informed classroom discussions about New England's role in slavery and its enduring impact.
Eligibility Information:
The institute is open to K-12 educators, including preservice teachers. It is designed to provide experiential learning opportunities across various age groups, with specialized workshops for teachers of K-6 and 7-12 students. We particularly encourage social studies, English teachers, and librarians to apply.
